About The Arran Butcher
We are a family butchers that has been supplying homes and businesses on the Isle of Arran for over 53 years. On the 3rd February 2017 we were extremely proud to become Salsa accredited. What is this you might ask?
THE SALSA STANDARD
The SALSA standard was written by experienced food safety experts to reflect both the legal requirements of producers and the enhanced expectations of 'best practice' of professional food buyers. Approval certification is only granted to suppliers who are able to demonstrate to a SALSA auditor that they are able to produce safe and legal food and are committed to continually meeting the requirements of the SALSA standard.
Originally known as HB McKinnon, Hugh McKinnon opened the butchers in 1964 and while the shop serviced Lochranza, he purchased a travelling shop and was able to expand, covering the north end from Pirnmill round to Corrie. In June 1986, his son David joined the business as an apprentice butcher where he served his time between college in Ayr and working in the shop. Not only did they supply the local community, they also were able to supply the yachtsmen anchoring in Lochranza Bay.
In 2008, Hugh decided to semi-retire and David stepped into his dad’s shoes, taking over the day to day running of HB McKinnon, Lochranza. In August 2011, David married Dawn and the family bought DLGalbraiths shop in Blackwaterfoot and successfully rebranded to become The Arran Butcher. Although the shop in Lochranza has now closed, our Mobile Shop provides a direct door to door service round the north end of the island every Friday morning. We also have two vans that deliver to the rest of the island throughout the week, allowing us to offer a unique, friendly and efficient service to all of our customers.
In April 2015 we were very proud to win the Scottish Rural Butcher Award.
